We tried to have the surgery done 2 months ago, but Cole got hand foot and mouth disease! We rescheduled it for Sept. 1st, but then Miss Avery was born on August 30th, so we rescheduled again, 3rd time has to be the charm, right? Well, 2 weeks ago, Cole got sick and has had a nasty cough, we were all holding our breath it would clear up and it did, thank goodness we can have the surgery!
We were on our way to CHOPs surgery center in Chalfont, it was a rainy morning, and we were half a mile away from the center, it was 8:20am and we were to be there at 8:40am! Right as we were making the left to go down the road that the surgery center was off of, someone side swiped us. We couldn't believe it! Phil and I just looked at each other and I don't think both of us said nice words! Phil continued to make the left and pulled into the gas station. The other driver moved to the center of the lane and put his 4 ways on. Phil got out of the car to wave him down, and the guy moved forward and we thought he was pulling into the gas station. Next thing I know, Phil is chasing the guy down the road as he is driving away!! Luckily Phil got his license plate and I was on the phone w/ 911 as the guys was driving off. We had to wait for the police to arrive to write up the report, and they were able to find the guy in the data base and were going to go to his house. While all this was happening I was on the phone with the surgery center apologizing for being late, they were soo understanding and told us to take our time!
Our nerves were already shot with the fact that our child was going to have surgery, be put under, have a tube down his throat, IV, the works, and then this! After I got off the phone with 911 I just broke down crying. I couldn't believe it! So many thoughts went through my head! I just prayed we could get to the surgery center and get the surgery done with!
The police were fantastic and so nice! They let us know they were going to go to the guys house and speak to him (hit and run! Hope they give him a nice lecture about leaving!), and then let us go on our way!
We arrived to the surgery center around 9:10am. They took us back to Cole's room right away and we put him in his yellow gown. They asked all the important questions like his birth date, how much he weighed, any allergies etc... and went over with us on what to expect! They were fabulous! All the nurses were so nice, and were very concerned about all of us from the car accident. They examined Cole and determined it was still safe to do the surgery.
They brought in "giggle juice" that would relax him and make the transition of leaving us and going back to the surgery room easier, and it would prevent him from remembering anything from that point on. They nurse came in and said that most kids hate the medicine and that they have trouble getting it in the kid.. Well, not our child! He sucked it down, and asked for MORE!! That made everyone laugh. Our nurse told us in about 10 minutes he would go limp and relaxed. Well, not our child, he sure did fight it! After about 25 mins he finally started to get a bit loopy, but not limp and relaxed! I was holding him and he looked up at me and said "hi grammy!" my response was "bud, it's mommy," and he said "Oh, Hi mom-ma." We laughed sooo hard!!! He wanted to keep rubbing his face on Phil's beard, and everything he did was in slow motion! It def. lightened the mood!
It was time for them to take him back and he didn't want to leave us :(, they placed him in the bed and he did a bit better. They wheeled him out of the room, and I turned my back and just started crying.. My world was being wheeled into another room all by himself with out the comfort of mommy or daddy! I didn't like the fact that i didn't know what was going on!
I went out to the car and pumped (yes details you probably don't want to know), and then I came in and waited in the waiting room w/ Phil. About 40 mins late the doctor came out and said it was a successful surgery and he was glad we removed it!
The nurse came out about 5 mins later to bring us back to see Cole. She said he was up and wasn't too happy! When we saw him his eyes were so red, and swollen and he looked so tired! He had an awful time waking up and cried for 45 mins, finally they discharged us with him crying so we could take him home and comfort him not in a hospital room!
So far he has been pretty good today! He is crying quite a bit, and the littlest thing triggers him and puts him in a crying fit. His incision isn't too big, and it doesn't seem to be bothering him!
Here are some pictures of before surgery with giggle juice in him!
