1. Say goodbye to Nuk!
2. Say goodbye to a bottle right before you fall asleep.
3. Say goodbye to fun bath times - we mean business right now.
4. Say goodbye to your swing at 4am
5. Say hello to mommy's boot camp!
That's right... all of the above is starting tonight, on his 6 month birthday.. I think he can handle it... don't you?
Anyways, I was reading last night why some children don't sleep through the night, or regress in sleeping.. You see, Cole has been a great sleeper since day 1! Now he is AWFUL! Last night he got up at 2am, we can maybe blame it on the little cold he has, but i doubt it.
About a month and a half ago he was sleeping 7:30pm-6:00am, we were LOVING life.. then it turned to 7:30pm - 5:30am. Okay - I still could function, but I must admit that I hate waking up with the clock having a 5 as the first number.. Now he sleeps from 7:30pm-4am, and last night it was 7:30pm-2am..Guess what Cole?, Not happening here in the Shoemaker house.
Okay, I'll get back to what I was reading, I was reading that if your child falls asleep with a nuk in his/her mouth, when they wake up they need that nuk to go back to sleep. Since Cole can't put that Nuk back into his his mouth yet on his own, we need to go in and do it, so he fusses until one of us comes in.. Soon after we do it, it falls out of his mouth before Cole can go back into a deep sleep. They referenced it to as if we fell asleep with a pillow and we wake up in the middle of the night and our pillow was missing we would say "What the heck, where's my pillow?" and we would look for it, find it, and go back to sleep in a matter of seconds - that is because we know how to put ourselves back to sleep. If we went to bed without a pillow, and woke up in the middle of the night without the pillow, we could easily put ourselves back to sleep and not think "where is my pillow?" and need to find it and have it before we fall back to sleep.. So, that is why mommy boot came has the nuk being taken away.. They also stated the same thing about a bottle right before you place them in the crib - they will associate relaxing and falling asleep to food. What we normally do is give Cole 5 oz's before he goes to bed. We sit in the chair and rock/snuggling him until he has 1 oz left. When that 1oz is left we place him in his crib and let him finish the bottle in his crib, and quickly place the nuk in his mouth without skipping a beat. They said that is a big no-no....
Next is goodbye fun bath time (for now!) They said at this young age bath time should be relaxing, and very quite.. Well, let me tell you, bath time is PARTY time! We normally make bath time fun, singing, splashing, tickling him when he gets out of the tub. What I read said that is a no no at this young of an age.. That when he wakes up, he is going to remember how much fun he had before bed and want to play! So we must have Cole think mommy and daddy are so boring that sleeping is so much better.. I think we can do that.
Next is say good bye to your swing sweet child! Normally when he would get up at 4am we would pick him up, and place him right in his swing. He would then sleep in his swing until about 6:30/7am.. Now, when he wakes up and makes a noise we have to get him up for the day. That means get him up, dress him, and make him play.. He will soon realize that is not what he wants to do -- I'm not sure about this suggestion. It just doesn't make sense to me. Option 2 was to go in at 5 mins and sooth him, walk out and if he is still fussing, go back in 10 mins later, each time we have to go in add 5 minutes. So i'll try that before I get him up for the day.. I'm not sure i'm ready to start my day at 4am, but i'm also not sure I want to play in and out of the room all morning.
Sounds harsh, huh? Well i thought so too until i saw this... Healthy Sleep Habits, Healthy Baby! OH and Happy Mommy!!!! This could all just be a load of crap, but its worth a shot..
So far tonight I started with number 1 and 2.. He fussed for a bit, but is now 100% asleep! Ahhhhhhh, I didnt have to go in at all and sooth him with placing his nuk in his mouth (this normally happens 2-3 times a night) maybe we are on to something- fingers crossed for the night.
Here is what Cole thinks of mommy's boot camp as I was explaining to him what was going to happen..
DON"T TAKE AWAY MY BOTTLE RIGHT BEFORE BED MOMMY!!!!!!!!
