Grandpap Day!

On October 6, 2011 Cole and my dad had a special day it was "Grandpap Day!" I made a shirt for Cole to wear, and we made one for my dad too! They talked about this day for about a week, and every day Cole would ask me if it was Grandpap day and could they go hiking.

I would go into the details, but I think it is best if I share this letter my dad wrote Cole. My dad didn't want either of them to forget this special day!

Dear Cole,
I wanted to write you today to tell you how much fun I had with you on our hike!
I took off about 5 hours from work to take you to get your haircut and then go on a hike. Our day started off when I picked you up at your house. You were so excited. I had told you we were going to do this and for the last few days you kept telling mommy and daddy that you were going on a hike with grandpap. You had a cool shirt on that said “Grandpap Day” and “Takin a hike with Grandpap”. Mommy had these made for both of us and we wore them on our hike.
We first went to get our haircut. You like Chip that cuts your hair. He had two people in front of you so I went first with one of the lady’s. You don’t let anyone cut your hair but Chip. You watched as the lady cut my hair. You were so good. You told me that I was good and that I was going to get a lollipop for being good. You were so excited that everyone in the barbershop laughed. After my haircut we had to still wait for Chip. We watched train clips on YouTube which you love. We looked at the Cat in the Hat book. Finally Chip was ready for you and you said you did not want a haircut now. I was concerned that you might get a bit fussy, but when I told you mommy said we needed to get our haircut you said “ok” and got in Chip’s chair. You were no problem. In the end you got your lollipop and you ate the one I got for my haircut and yours.
Next we went to Wawa to get our lunch for the hike. As we walked in you said to a lady that passed us that you were going on a hike with grandpap. She smiled and said that was good and have fun. You said that you were going to have fun. Inside you picked out a fruit and cheese pack for lunch. You then got Cheez-it and an apple juice drink with a Bob the Builder cap on it. As we passed the candy you saw M&M’s your favorite and asked if you could get them. We got you a bag but I said you could have them after your nap. You said ok. Then we got a squeeze-it drink that you like…Apple-Banana. I got a sandwich and drink too. I asked if we could share the Cheez-it’s and you said, “sure grandpap that is a good deal”.
Then we headed to the park by your house so we could begin our hike. You were so excited you were singing in the car…”going on a hike with grandpap”. I would sing with you…”going on a hike with Cole”. On our hike we saw guys fly fishing and you wanted to do that. We sat on a bench and ate our lunch. We looked at trees and leaves and all the pretty colors. You found a path that lead us down to the river. We threw rocks in the river and cheered when they made a splash. We then hiked some more and found this cool rock that we climbed that jutted out over the river. We looked down and said “woooooo”. You threw more rocks in the river as I held on to you. You did not like me holding on to you but I said I had to make sure you did not fall in as mommy and daddy would not be happy if you fell in. You said why. You are saying why a lot right now as you are so interested in so many things and how they work. We then continued on hiking. We came to a hill that you wanted to climb and away you were off up the hill. I followed you up the hill. You kept sliding back down as you climbed but you kept going. You got quite a ways up and I took pictures of you up there. You were so excited to climb. You asked me to help you down the hill and we did it together. I told you that I needed your help and you said “sure grandpap I help you…be careful”. We had walked about a mile and it was time to begin our walk back to the car. Along the way you said hi to a lot of people. You stopped along the way to meet a dog that a lady was walking. She said his name was Finnegan. You could not say Finnegan to well and it was cute. You petted the dog and said “hi, my name is Cole”. About half way back you just stopped and sat down in the grass along the path and said, “I want more of my lunch”. So we sat there and had more lunch. You had run out of drink so I filled up your Bob the Builder bottle with some of my juice. You said, “thank you grandpap”. About ¼ of a mile away from our car you turned to me and said, “hold me grandpap”. I picked you up in my arms and asked if you were tired. You said “no”, but I think you were. I carried you the rest of the way to the car. Along the way I gave you a kiss and told you I loved you. You kissed and hugged me and said, “I love you grandpap”.
We got in the car and headed home to your house. You said to me, “I go to grandpap’s house now”. I said no we need to go to your house and see mommy. You said, “ok, I go see mommy”. When we pulled into the driveway your mommy and Avery were waiting. We were so excited to see them and you got out and told them all that we did.
I had one of the best days of my life today with you. I hope we can go on many more hikes. You are a special boy and I love you so much.
Love Always,

Never forget this day baby boy, it was one special day....
